Plant variety rights

China's applications for plant variety rights reached 4,695 by the end of 2007. Of those 1,417 were approved. "New varieties of plants refers to plants bred artificially or developed from natural plants which possess novelty, specialty, homogeneity and stability," says Deputy Director of the Crop Production Department of the Ministry of Agriculture Ma Shuping. China began implementing the protection of new plant varieties in 1997 and its annual amount of applications currently ranks the fourth in the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants.
